Irrigation Leaks

Does your sprinkler system have a leak that wasn’t there the last time you checked your system? Are you wondering what caused that leak and why did it seem to appear overnight? Leaks in sprinkler systems can happen in an instant, however in most cases a leak in an irrigation system is a gradual process that happens over time with symptoms appearing to a homeowner suddenly and out of nowhere. Below are some common reasons for irrigation pipe leaks and key things to look for when assessing your irrigation system.

  1. Freezes: As the temperatures in southern climates change from cold to hot, pvc pipes expand and contract causing wear on the pipe and potential cracks. Over time this expansion and contraction of pipes can cause hairline cracks. Some cracks slowly leak water and are harder to identify from the surface whereas larger cracks cause leaks that appear as pools of water in one location potentially flooding the landscape. To prevent freezing, winterize your backflow and pressurize the system before freezing temperatures.

  1. High water pressure: Leaks and bursts can happen when the water pressure is too high for your irrigation pipes. High pressure in the irrigation system over time can have negative long-term effects. Many homes in DFW have pressure regulators installed to control pressure going into the home and irrigation system. However, after 5 years pressure regulators can become faulty which increases the pressure in your irrigation system. Have an irrigation expert or plumber check the pressure at your backflow device to determine if the pressure in your irrigation system is too high.
  1. Accidental Damage: Most of the accidental damage we find comes from homeowners digging and hitting a pipe with a shovel or other landscape tool. Be careful where you dig and dig slowly to avoid hitting a pipe. Other accidental damages include damaging irrigation pipes with termite spikes, heavy machinery or equipment, mowing and tilling of landscape, and weed eating! If you have a leak, think back to what happened in that area in the past. Did you have a shrub removed or were you planting a new tree? Did your exterminators install pest control devices around your home? Did your neighbor build a pool or have concrete poured?

  1. Exposed Pipe: Pipe that is not buried is exposed to the sun and other elements are susceptible to damage that causes leaks. All pipes should be correctly buried to avoid leaks. Check your yard for soil erosion that can lead to pipes being exposed. If you find an exposed pipe, call an irrigation expert to get it properly buried.

  1. Nature: Roots from trees and shrubs planted on or near an irrigation pipe can grow in and around the pipe causing the pipe to shift or crack. As roots grow, they are attracted to moisture and therefore grow toward irrigation causing other components like flex pipe or sprinkler heads to break as well. Be sure to plant new trees and shrubs far away from irrigation pipes. That won’t prevent future problems as roots have a mind of their own, however it can prolong the life of your irrigation system. If your root is growing into the pipe, rerouting the irrigation line is the best way to prevent continuing issues.
