How to Tell If Your Sprinkler System Is Wasting Water

|

With water being a precious commodity these days, especially in the Carolinas where heat and drought may be occasionally a problem, conserving water is important.

Interestingly enough, water conservation is the key premise behind Conserva Irrigation. For homeowners and businesses throughout the North Carolina counties of Iredell, Lincoln, Catawba and Mecklenburg, using water intelligently is the foundation of our mission.

signs your sprinkler system is wasting water

Throughout Mooresville, Huntersville, Cornelius and Concord, keeping lawns green is a science to avoid wasting water, and that’s where our renowned expertise can help.

Unfortunately for many Lake Norman area lawns and landscapes, irrigation water waste is often never recognized to the untrained eye. And that is where Conserva irrigation can be a tremendous help. Even better, our professional irrigation conservation experts offer a free inspection of your system. All you need to do is contact us at 704-960-1565.

While inspecting your sprinkler system, we can determine how it’s performing and if water is being wasted. If it is, we will give you every opportunity to improve it and maximize performance. We will make sprinkler system adjustments so you use only the water necessary to keep your lawn and landscape healthy and beautiful.

Let’s take a look at the most common warning signs and how they can be remedied by our conservation experts

1. You have been noticing standing water and various puddles of water. Most likely, there is a sprinkler system malfunction due to a sprinkler head that is damaged or broken. The problem may also be caused by an underground system pipe that is leaking. In addition, there may be an imbalance in system pressure as there may be a nozzle clog. After diagnosing the problem, our team can adjust run times, inspect your sprinkler valves, repair leaks and replace any heads that are damaged.

2. You are seeing patches of your lawn that are dry while adjacent areas are very damp and wet. This is a good indication that your sprinkler heads need to be realigned and that worn sprinkler nozzles need to be replaced. Malfunctioning and broken heads can waste enormous amounts of water – as much as hundreds of gallons each month. Those heads need to be replaced as soon as possible.

3. When viewing your Ring camera, you notice that your system is suddenly spraying a foggy mist instead of a stream of water. This is an indication that your system pressure is too high, and new regulators need to be installed.

4. You noticed that your sprinkler system heads continue to leak once the system is off. How can we stop that waste? Our technicians will determine the root of the problem and fix it. The most likely causes are valves that are faulty and/or seals that are worn. Our Conserva Irrigation professionals will check those zone valves and repair or replace them, if needed.

5. Your shrubs and plants are showing signs of mildew and fungus all of a sudden. How can we prevent this? This is a common plight when vegetation leaves are watered too much and/or too often. This can happen during bouts of heavy rainfall while your system is running its normal course. Adjusting watering during these times can easily be done by our team for your convenience. Installing a rain sensor is the best course of action here by upgrading to a Smart Sprinkler System Controller that adjusts to weather changes.

When in doubt, walk it out, with these 7 steps

You can keep tabs on your sprinkler system by auditing it each month, especially when summer is at its peak. Here’s how to do it in just 10 minutes time.

1. First turn on each zone individually, and note any peculiarities.

2. Be sure to walk around the complete zone and watch for heads that are tilted, clogged or broken.

3. Be sure that each sprinkler head pops up completely.

4. Determine if your spray patterns overlay one another, as they should to ensure coverage of each zone.

5. Check for wasted runoff onto sidewalks, patios and driveways.

6. Make note of any areas that seem unusually dry or wet.

7. Check that your sprinkler system controller is in sync with the weather and confirm run times.
