How to Prepare Your Sprinklers for Colder Temperatures this Winter

There’s no doubt that the temperatures fluctuate in the Houston area. One minute it’s warm, and the next minute you’re grabbing a heavy coat on your way outside.  Now in late fall, temperatures are on a downward trend, and it’s essential to adjust your sprinkler system accordingly.

During the spring and summer, your sprinkler system is in a heavy watering pattern.  By November, the heat has subsided, and it’s raining more. Unless you lower your sprinkler’s water distribution levels, you’re more than likely overwatering. For less water, you need to adjust the programming on your controller. We recommend dialing back water distribution levels by no more than one inch per week through mid-December.

Prepare Sprinklers for Winter with a High-Quality Sprinkler System Winterization

undefinedWith winter approaching, there is no task more important that winterizing your sprinkler. After turning off the water, it’s critical to evacuate all the water from your system. Pay special attention to your PVB, even if you insulate your PVB, to make sure there is no condensation remaining.

When temperatures dip below freezing, any water left in your system can freeze and cause the pipes to burst, resulting in extensive damage. Unless your winterization is performed to the highest quality standard, you could be looking at a partial or complete sprinkler system replacement come spring.

Some people may try to prepare their sprinklers for winter themselves, but we recommend leaving the job to a professional.  Only a sprinkler expert has the experience, expertise, and diagnostic tools to properly winterize your system.  Anything less, and you’re putting your sprinkler system at risk.

When Conserva Irrigation of North Houston comes out for a sprinkler system winterization, we turn off the water and expertly drain all the water from your system. We take special care with your PVB to ensure that any condensation does not freeze.  As part of our process, we offer a 12-point sprinkler inspection to evaluate your system above and below the surface, checking for any necessary repairs. This way, you can take care of any problems before you turn the water back on in the spring.
